The Dora Drinkwater Community Library, previously known as the Denman Island Community Library, was re-christened in the 1990’s. Dora Drinkwater and the library are inextricably linked.

The library is located in the Denman Island Community Hall, in downtown Denman. It is open Monday through Saturday from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

Loan Procedures

  • Books may be taken out for two weeks at a time.
  • The library has many books that can be renewed continuously, either because most people have already read them, or because no one but you wants to read them.

Fines

It is the custom of the library not to assess fines.

It used to be that after a reasonable time overdue books were added to a list which hung over the Librarians desk and was called the"Wall of Shame." It has been discontinued not only because of concerns that a number of Islanders were consumed with excessive guilt but also because a portion of Islanders seemed to see being on the list as a status symbol.

Time permitting those who are late in returning books may receive a phone call and/or a reminder letter. Self-imposed fines are welcome.

The library has around 5000 books, including an excellent selection of Canadiana and a section devoted to local authors.
